Stupňování přídavných jmen v angličtině: -er, more a the bestComparatives and superlatives in English: -er, more and the best

Anglicky se stupňuje podle délky slova: cheap → cheaper, ale expensive → more expensive. Češi to buď zdvojí (more bigger), nebo přenesou z češtiny (very better, older then me, the best of the world). Tady jsou tři skupiny přídavných jmen, tabulka 41 nejčastějších slov, pravopis, nepravidelné tvary, than, the, as … as a stupňování příslovcí — a 149 cvičení na klepnutí, bez psaní.

English compares adjectives by their length: cheap → cheaper, but expensive → more expensive. Learners double it (more bigger) or translate from their own language (very better, older then me, the best of the world). Here are the three groups of adjectives, a table of 41 common ones, spelling, irregular forms, than, the, as … as and comparing adverbs — and 141 tap-to-answer exercises.

Nejdřív rozhovor: proč bigger, ale more modern?First the conversation: why bigger but more modern?

Petr vybírá mezi dvěma byty a Eva mu radí. Srovnávají pořád — a přesto jednou řeknou bigger a jindy more modern (tučně). Přečti si to a pak v obou krocích pod tím přijdi na to, podle čeho se tvar vybírá.

Petr is choosing between two flats and Eva is helping. They compare all the time — yet once they say bigger and another time more modern (in bold). Read it, then use the two steps below to work out what decides the form.

Eva: So which flat are you going to take — the one on Palackého Street or the one by the station?
Petr: The one by the station is bigger and cheaper, but the street is noisier.
Eva: And the other one?
Petr: It’s smaller, but it’s more modern and the kitchen is more comfortable. And it’s closer to work.
Eva: Then it’s the better choice, isn’t it? The station is the worst part of town at night.
Petr: True. And the landlord was nicer — the most helpful of all the people I met. Honestly, it was the easiest decision of the year.
Eva: See? The best flat isn’t always the biggest one.

3. Zkontroluj si pravidlo3. Check your rule

Co ti vyšlo: rozhoduje délka přídavného jména. Krátká (big, cheap, nice) → -er / the -est. Dvě slabiky na -y (noisy, easy) → -ier / the -iest. Dlouhá (modern, comfortable, helpful) → more / the most. A good a bad mají vlastní slova: better, the best, the worst. To je celé pravidlo — zbytek stránky je pravopis, than, the a cvičení. Všimni si ještě: the biggest, the best — 3. stupeň má vždy the.

What you found: the length of the adjective decides. Short (big, cheap, nice) → -er / the -est. Two syllables ending in -y (noisy, easy) → -ier / the -iest. Long (modern, comfortable, helpful) → more / the most. Good and bad have their own words: better, the best, the worst. That is the whole rule — the rest of the page is spelling, than, the and practice. One more thing: the biggest, the best — the superlative always takes the.

Stupňování přídavných jmen v angličtině — přehled v jedné tabulceComparatives and superlatives — overview in one table

Angličtina má tři stupně jako čeština: velký – větší – největší = big – bigger – the biggest. Jak se 2. a 3. stupeň tvoří, záleží na tom, jak dlouhé je slovo.

English has three degrees: big – bigger – the biggest. How you make the comparative and superlative depends on how long the word is.

Krátká přídavná jména: tall → taller → the tallestShort adjectives: tall → taller → the tallest

Jednoslabičná přídavná jména dostanou -er ve 2. stupni a the … -est ve 3.: cold → colder → the coldest. Stejně i dvouslabičná na -y, jen y se změní na i: easy → easier → the easiest. Žádné more: more cold, more easy.

One-syllable adjectives take -er in the comparative and the … -est in the superlative: cold → colder → the coldest. So do two-syllable adjectives ending in -y, but the y becomes i: easy → easier → the easiest. No more: more cold, more easy.

Čtyři pravidla, která platí i pro -ed a -ing u sloves. Nejvíc chyb dělá zdvojení: big → bigger, ne biger.

Four rules — the same ones as for -ed and -ing on verbs. Most mistakes are in doubling: big → bigger, not biger.

Přídavná jména se dvěma a víc slabikami (kromě těch na -y) se nemění — před ně se dá more nebo the most: expensive → more expensive → the most expensive. Pozor na krátká dvouslabičná: modern, famous, boring, careful mají taky more. Opak je less / the least: less expensive.

Adjectives with two or more syllables (except those ending in -y) don't change — put more or the most in front: expensive → more expensive → the most expensive. Watch the short two-syllable ones: modern, famous, boring, careful take more too. The opposite is less / the least: less expensive.

Po 2. stupni následuje than (než) — ne then (potom), ne as. Rozdíl zesílíš much / a lot / far, zmírníš a bit / slightly. Very bigger neexistuje — very se pojí jen se základním tvarem (very big).

After a comparative comes than — not then, not as. Make the difference bigger with much / a lot / far, smaller with a bit / slightly. Very bigger doesn't exist — very goes only with the base form (very big).

Stupňování příslovcí v angličtině: faster, more carefully, betterComparing adverbs: faster, more carefully, better

Příslovce říká, jak něco děláš (rychle, opatrně, dobře), a stupňuje se skoro stejně. Krátká, která vypadají jako přídavné jméno (fast, hard, late, early, soon), dostanou -er / -est. Příslovce na -ly dostanou more / the most: more carefully, ne carefullier. A well → better → the best, badly → worse → the worst.

An adverb says how you do something, and it compares almost the same way. Short ones that look like adjectives (fast, hard, late, early, soon) take -er / -est. Adverbs ending in -ly take more / the most: more carefully, not carefullier. And well → better → the best, badly → worse → the worst.

Pozor: hardly není „tvrději“, ale „sotva“ (I hardly know him). Od hard je příslovce prostě hard: She works harder than me.

Careful: hardly means „barely“ (I hardly know him). The adverb of hard is just hard: She works harder than me.

2., nebo 3. stupeň? Dvě věci × celá skupinaComparative or superlative? Two things × the whole group

Srovnáváš dvě věci → 2. stupeň, obvykle s than. Vybíráš jednu z celé skupiny → 3. stupeň s the. Nápověda je ve větě: than → 2. stupeň, in the world, of all, ever → 3. stupeň.

Comparing two things → comparative, usually with than. Picking one out of the whole group → superlative with the. The sentence gives you a clue: than → comparative, in the world, of all, ever → superlative.

Stupňování přídavných jmen v angličtině — časté otázkyComparatives and superlatives — frequently asked questions

Co je comparative a superlative? What are the comparative and the superlative?

Comparative = 2. stupeň (bigger, more expensive — větší, dražší), srovnává dvě věci. Superlative = 3. stupeň (the biggest, the most expensive — největší, nejdražší), vybírá jednu z celé skupiny. 1. stupeň je základní tvar (big).

The comparative (bigger, more expensive) compares two things. The superlative (the biggest, the most expensive) picks one out of the whole group. The base form is just the adjective (big).

Jak se stupňují přídavná jména v angličtině?How do you compare adjectives in English?

Podle délky. Krátká (jedna slabika) dostanou -er / the -est: tall → taller → the tallest. Dvouslabičná na -y mění y na i: happy → happier → the happiest. Dlouhá (dvě a víc slabik) mají more / the most: expensive → more expensive → the most expensive. Několik slov je nepravidelných: good → better → the best, bad → worse → the worst.

By length. Short adjectives (one syllable) take -er / the -est: tall → taller → the tallest. Two syllables ending in -y change y to i: happy → happier → the happiest. Long adjectives (two or more syllables) take more / the most: expensive → more expensive → the most expensive. A few are irregular: good → better → the best, bad → worse → the worst.

Kdy se píše -er a kdy more? When do you use -er and when more?

Jedna slabika → -er (cheap → cheaper). Dvě slabiky a na konci -y → -ier (easy → easier). Všechno ostatní → more (modern → more modern, beautiful → more beautiful). Nikdy obojí: more bigger.

One syllable → -er (cheap → cheaper). Two syllables ending in -y → -ier (easy → easier). Everything else → more (modern → more modern, beautiful → more beautiful). Never both: more bigger.

Proč bigger a ne biger? Why bigger and not biger?

Když slovo končí na souhlásku–samohlásku–souhlásku, poslední souhláska se zdvojí: big → bigger, hot → hotter, thin → thinner, sad → sadder. Tím se zachová krátká výslovnost samohlásky. Na -w, -x a -y se nezdvojuje: new → newer.

When a word ends in consonant–vowel–consonant, double the last consonant: big → bigger, hot → hotter, thin → thinner, sad → sadder. It keeps the vowel short. Don't double -w, -x or -y: new → newer.

Jaké jsou nepravidelné tvary? What are the irregular forms?

good → better → the best, bad → worse → the worst, far → further / farther → the furthest / farthest, little → less → the least, much / many → more → the most. Stejně se stupňují příslovce well (better, best) a badly (worse, worst).

good → better → the best, bad → worse → the worst, far → further / farther → the furthest / farthest, little → less → the least, much / many → more → the most. The adverbs well (better, best) and badly (worse, worst) work the same way.

Than, nebo then?Than or then?

Than = než: She's older than me. Then = potom, pak: We had lunch, then we left. Vyslovují se skoro stejně, proto se pletou i rodilým mluvčím.

Than compares: She's older than me. Then means after that: We had lunch, then we left. They sound almost the same, so even native speakers mix them up.

Taller than me, nebo taller than I?Taller than me or taller than I?

V běžné řeči taller than me. Formálně taller than I am. Samotné taller than I zní dnes knižně.

In everyday speech, taller than me. Formally, taller than I am. Taller than I on its own sounds old-fashioned.

Jak se řekne „o hodně větší“ a „o trochu větší“?How do you say much bigger and a bit bigger?

much / a lot / far + 2. stupeň: much bigger, a lot cheaper, far better. a bit / a little / slightly + 2. stupeň: a bit older. Very s 2. stupněm nejde: very bigger.

much / a lot / far + comparative: much bigger, a lot cheaper, far better. a bit / a little / slightly + comparative: a bit older. Very doesn't go with comparatives: very bigger.

Kdy in a kdy of po 3. stupni? In or of after a superlative?

in + místo nebo skupina: the best in the world, the tallest in my family, the fastest in the team. of + období nebo počet: the best day of my life, the coldest month of the year, the youngest of the three.

in + a place or group: the best in the world, the tallest in my family, the fastest in the team. of + a period or a number: the best day of my life, the coldest month of the year, the youngest of the three.

Musí být před 3. stupněm the?Does a superlative need the?

Ano, téměř vždy: the biggest, the best, the most expensive. Vynechá se jen po přivlastňovacím zájmenu (my best friend).

Yes, almost always: the biggest, the best, the most expensive. It drops only after a possessive (my best friend).

Jak se řekne „stejně … jako“ a „ne tak … jako“?How do you say just as … as and not as … as?

as + přídavné jméno + as: She's as tall as me. Zápor not as … as: It isn't as cold as yesterday. Uprostřed je vždy základní tvar — ne as taller as.

as + adjective + as: She's as tall as me. Negative not as … as: It isn't as cold as yesterday. The middle is always the base form — not as taller as.

Jak se řekne „čím dál“ a „čím … tím“?How do you say „more and more“ and „the more … the more“?

Čím dál = 2. stupeň dvakrát: bigger and bigger, u dlouhých more and more expensive. Čím … tím = the + 2. stupeň, the + 2. stupeň: The sooner, the better.

Repeat the comparative: bigger and bigger, for long words more and more expensive. the + comparative, the + comparative: The sooner, the better.

Jak se stupňují příslovce v angličtině?How do you compare adverbs in English?

Krátká příslovce stejná jako přídavné jméno (fast, hard, early, late, soon) dostanou -er / -est: faster, the hardest. Příslovce na -ly mají more / the most: more carefully, the most quickly. Nepravidelné: well → better → the best, badly → worse → the worst.

Short adverbs that look like adjectives (fast, hard, early, late, soon) take -er / -est: faster, the hardest. Adverbs ending in -ly take more / the most: more carefully, the most quickly. Irregular: well → better → the best, badly → worse → the worst.

Proč more tired a more fun, když mají jednu slabiku? Why more tired and more fun if they have one syllable?

Výjimky. Přídavná jména na -ed (tired, bored, scared) mají more: more tired. Stejně fun → more fun, real → more real, right / wrong → more right / more wrong. Funner uslyšíš od dětí, ale ve škole je chyba.

They are exceptions. Adjectives ending in -ed (tired, bored, scared) take more: more tired. So do fun → more fun, real → more real, right / wrong → more right / more wrong. Kids say funner, but it's a mistake in an exam.

Clever, quiet, simple — -er, nebo more?Clever, quiet, simple — -er or more?

Některá dvouslabičná slova mají obojí: cleverer / more clever, quieter / more quiet, simpler / more simple, narrower / more narrow. Obojí je správně; na zkoušce je bezpečnější -er.

A few two-syllable words take both: cleverer / more clever, quieter / more quiet, simpler / more simple, narrower / more narrow. Both are correct; -er is the safer choice in an exam.
