Budoucí čas v angličtině: will, going to a present continuousThe future in English: will, going to and the present continuous

Budoucí čas má v angličtině tři podoby: I'll call you, I'm going to buy a car, I'm meeting Tom at six. Čeština má jednu (zavolám, koupím, sejdu se) — proto Češi říkají will všude a dělají chyby jako I will visit my grandma on Sunday, Look at the clouds, it will rain, When I will have time. Tady je, kdy který tvar, zápor a otázky, věty po when a if, časové údaje — a 174 cvičení na klepnutí, bez psaní.

The future in English has three forms: I'll call you, I'm going to buy a car, I'm meeting Tom at six. Learners whose language has one future say will everywhere and make mistakes like I will visit my grandma on Sunday, Look at the clouds, it will rain, When I will have time. Here is which form when, negatives and questions, clauses after when and if, time phrases — and 164 tap-to-answer exercises.

Nejdřív rozhovor: najdi čtyři tvary budoucnostiFirst the conversation: find the four future forms

The weekend is coming and Tom and Anna are texting. They only talk about the future — and still use four different forms (in bold). Read it, then use the two steps below to work out why they chose a different one each time.

Tom: What are you doing at the weekend?
Anna: I’m meeting Lucie on Saturday. We’re going to try the new Thai place — we booked a table yesterday.
Tom: Nice. I think I’ll just stay at home. Look at the forecast — it’s going to rain all weekend.
Anna: If it rains, we’ll go to the cinema instead.
Tom: OK, I’ll call you on Sunday, then.
Anna: Fine. My train leaves at six and the film starts at eight, so call me before that.

3. Zkontroluj si pravidlo3. Check your rule

Co ti vyšlo: v každém sloupci se sešel jeden tvar. Rozhoduju se teď, slibuju, odhaduju → will (I’ll stay, we’ll go, I’ll call). Mám to v plánu, nebo vidím, že se to stane → going to (we’re going to try, it’s going to rain). Domluveno → present continuous (are you doing, I’m meeting). Pevný rozvrh → present simple (my train leaves, the film starts). A všimni si: po if je přítomný čas (if it rains), i když jde o budoucnost.

What you found: one form per column. Deciding now, promising, guessing → will (I’ll stay, we’ll go, I’ll call). A plan, or I can see it coming → going to (we’re going to try, it’s going to rain). Arranged → present continuous (are you doing, I’m meeting). A fixed timetable → present simple (my train leaves, the film starts). That is the whole rule — the rest of the page is forms, details and practice. And notice: after if comes the present (if it rains), even though it is about the future.

Budoucí čas v angličtině — tři způsoby v jedné tabulceThe future in English — three ways in one table

English has no single future tense. It has three common ways, and each says something different about when you decided and how fixed the plan is. Forms first, which one when right below.

Going to: am / is / are + going to + slovesoGoing to: am / is / are + going to + verb

Zápor i otázku dělá sloveso být: I’m not going to, Are you going to…?

Going to needs be to agree with the subject, and the base form after it: I’m going to leave, she’s going to study, they’re going to buy. Learners drop be (I going to) or change the verb after going to (she’s going to buys, I’m going to went). Be makes the negative and the question: I’m not going to, Are you going to…?

Domluvené plány: I’m meeting Tom at six. Jízdní řád: The train leaves at 8.Arrangements: I’m meeting Tom at six. Timetables: The train leaves at 8.

Will sem nepatří. Pro jízdní řády a programy je present simple: The train leaves at 8.15.

Czech uses the present for arranged plans — zítra jedu do Prahy — and so does English, but the continuous: I’m going to Prague tomorrow, I’m meeting Tom at six. Will doesn’t belong here. For timetables and programmes use the present simple: The train leaves at 8.15.

Will: budoucnost jedním slovemWill: the future in one word

Will stojí před slovesem a pro všechny osoby je stejné. Sloveso po něm je v základním tvaru — žádné -s, žádné to: she will call, ne she will calls, ne she will to call. V řeči se zkracuje na ’ll: I’ll, you’ll, she’ll, we’ll.

Will goes before the verb and is the same for every person. The verb after it is in the base form — no -s, no to: she will call, not she will calls, not she will to call. In speech it shortens to ’ll: I’ll, you’ll, she’ll, we’ll.

Will, nebo going to? Rozhodnutí teď × plánWill or going to? Deciding now × a plan

Czech says „koupím, zavolám“ for both. English cares when you decided. Right now, while speaking — the phone rings, someone needs help, you choose from a menu — that’s will. Earlier, you have a plan, the tickets, the tools in your hand — that’s going to.

Předpovědi: Look, it’s going to rain × I think it’ll rainPredictions: Look, it’s going to rain × I think it’ll rain

When you can see it coming — clouds, a 3–0 score, a glass at the edge of the table — say going to. When you just guess (I think, I’m sure, probably, maybe), will is usual — but going to is not a mistake: I think it’ll rain and I think it’s going to rain are both fine. The rule worth watching is the first one: evidence in front of you → going to.

Will, going to, nebo present continuous? Všechny tři dohromadyWill, going to or the present continuous? All three together

Czech says „koupím“, „navštívím“, „vezmu si“ the same way every time. In English the form tells you where the plan stands: deciding now (will), already decided or seeing it coming (going to), arranged (present continuous). In the first exercise the sentences come in pairs — the same verb, just a different situation.

Po when a if bez will: When I get home, I’ll call youNo will after when and if: When I get home, I’ll call you

Česky má věta „až přijdu, zavolám“ dvě budoucnosti. Anglicky jen jednu: will je v hlavní větě, po when, if, until, before, after, as soon as je přítomný čas. When I will come je nejčastější česká chyba v budoucím čase.

„Až přijdu, zavolám“ has two futures in Czech. English has one: will in the main clause, and the present after when, if, until, before, after, as soon as. When I will come is the most common Czech mistake in the future.

Budoucí čas v angličtině — časté otázkyThe future in English — frequently asked questions

Jak se tvoří budoucí čas v angličtině?How do you form the future in English?

Třemi způsoby. Will + základní tvar (I'll call you) pro rozhodnutí v okamžiku řeči, sliby a názory.

In three ways. Will + base form (I'll call you) for decisions at the moment of speaking, promises and opinions. Going to (I'm going to buy a car) for a plan you already have and for what you can see coming. The present continuous (I'm meeting Tom at six) for an arranged plan with a time or place.

Kdy se používá will a kdy going to?When do you use will and when going to?

Rozhoduje, kdy ses rozhodl. Právě teď, při mluvení (zvoní telefon — I'll get it) → will. Už dřív, máš plán (I'm going to study abroad) → going to. U předpovědí: vidíš, že se to stane (Look at the clouds — it's going to rain) → going to. Při pouhém odhadu (I think it'll rain) je obvyklé will, ale going to není chyba.

It depends on when you decided. Right now, while speaking (the phone rings — I'll get it) → will. Earlier, you have a plan (I'm going to study abroad) → going to. Predictions: you can see it coming (Look at the clouds — it's going to rain) → going to. For a mere guess (I think it'll rain) will is usual, but going to is not a mistake.

Můžu říct I think it's going to rain? Can I say I think it's going to rain?

Ano. Při odhadu bez důkazu je will obvyklejší (I think it'll rain), ale going to je taky správně a v mluvené angličtině běžné. Chyba je jen opačný směr: s důkazem před očima zní Look at the clouds, it will rain divně — tam patří going to.

Yes. For a guess with no evidence will is more usual (I think it'll rain), but going to is also correct and common in speech. The only real mistake is the other direction: with evidence in front of you, Look at the clouds, it will rain sounds odd — that's going to.

How do you make the negative and questions with will?

Zápor: won't (will not) + základní tvar: I won't forget. Otázka: will na začátek: Will you help me? Where will they live? Krátká odpověď: Yes, I will. / No, I won't. Nikdy don't will ani Do you will.

Negative: won't (will not) + base form: I won't forget. Question: will first: Will you help me? Where will they live? Short answer: Yes, I will. / No, I won't. Never don't will or Do you will.

Co je going to a jak se tvoří?What is going to and how is it formed?

Am / is / are + going to + základní tvar: I'm going to leave, she's going to study, they're going to buy. Zápor: I'm not going to, he isn't going to. Otázka: Are you going to…? Is she going to…?

Am / is / are + going to + base form: I'm going to leave, she's going to study, they're going to buy. Negative: I'm not going to, he isn't going to. Question: Are you going to…? Is she going to…? The verb after going to never changes: not she's going to buys, not I'm going to went.

Může budoucnost vyjádřit přítomný čas?Can a present tense express the future?

Ano, a často. Present simple pro jízdní řády a programy: The train leaves at 8.15, the film starts at nine.

Yes, often. The present continuous for arrangements: I'm having lunch with Eva tomorrow. The present simple for timetables and programmes: The train leaves at 8.15, the film starts at nine.

Proč se po when a if nepoužívá will? Why is there no will after when and if?

Angličtina dá budoucnost jen do hlavní věty. Po when, if, until, before, after, as soon as je přítomný čas: When I get home, I'll call you. If it rains, we'll stay in. Čeština má budoucnost v obou větách (až přijdu, zavolám), proto Češi píšou When I will come.

English puts the future only in the main clause. After when, if, until, before, after, as soon as use the present: When I get home, I'll call you. If it rains, we'll stay in.

Jak se řekne „za dva dny“ a „příští týden“?How do you say „za dva dny“ and „příští týden“?

Za dva dny = in two days (ne after two days), za hodinu = in an hour. Příští týden = next week bez the a bez in (ne the next week). Zítra = tomorrow, pozítří = the day after tomorrow, dnes večer = tonight.

in two days (not after two days), in an hour. next week with no the and no in (not the next week). tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, tonight.

Co znamená gonna? What does gonna mean?

Hovorová výslovnost going to: I'm gonna leave = I'm going to leave. Uslyšíš ji v písničkách a filmech. V psaném textu, ve škole a v práci piš going to.

The spoken form of going to: I'm gonna leave = I'm going to leave. You hear it in songs and films. In writing, at school and at work, write going to.

Co je shall?What is shall?

Shall I…? / Shall we…? je nabídka nebo návrh: Shall I open the window? (Mám otevřít okno?), Shall we go? (Půjdeme?). Jako budoucí čas místo will (I shall) je dnes knižní; v běžné řeči stačí will.

Shall I…? / Shall we…? is an offer or a suggestion: Shall I open the window? Shall we go? As a future tense instead of will (I shall) it is formal today; in everyday speech will is enough.

České „budu“ + sloveso — je to will, nebo going to?Czech „budu“ + verb — is it will or going to?

Podle situace, ne podle českého tvaru. Budu doma (prostě to tak bude) → I'll be at home. Budu se učit (mám to v plánu) → I'm going to study. České dokonavé „zavolám, koupím“ je taky obojí: slib → I'll call, plán → I'm going to buy.

It depends on the situation, not on the Czech form. Budu doma (it will simply be so) → I'll be at home. Budu se učit (a plan) → I'm going to study. Perfective „zavolám, koupím“ is both: a promise → I'll call, a plan → I'm going to buy.

What is the difference between going to and the present continuous for plans?

Malý. Present continuous = domluveno s ostatními, s časem a místem (I'm meeting Tom at six). Going to = můj záměr, nemusí být domluvený (I'm going to tidy the garage). U plánů jsou často možné oba; will ne.

Small. The present continuous = arranged with other people, with a time and place (I'm meeting Tom at six). Going to = my intention, not necessarily arranged (I'm going to tidy the garage). For plans both are often fine; will is not.

Jak se zkracuje will a will not?How are will and will not shortened?

I will → I'll, you'll, he'll, she'll, it'll, we'll, they'll. Will not → won't (čti /wəʊnt/). V otázce a krátké odpovědi se will nezkracuje: Will you? — Yes, I will.

I will → I'll, you'll, he'll, she'll, it'll, we'll, they'll. Will not → won't (/wəʊnt/). In questions and short answers will is not shortened: Will you? — Yes, I will.
