Rally
How to play
- Choose a level and a set of verbs. The recommended set is marked.
- You see and hear the base form: go · ___ · ___.
- Checkpoint 1 = past simple. Three gates, for example went / goed / gone. Steer into the right one (tap a lane, use the arrow keys or swipe).
- Checkpoint 2 = past participle. Three new gates: gone / went / goned.
- A right gate fills in the form and reads it out. A wrong gate slows the car, shows the right form, and the verb comes back three verbs later.
- Finish first to win. One mistake is fine, two are too many.
Why a race helps
- You recall the form under time pressure. A few seconds per gate means you can't work it out, you have to know it.
- The traps are real learner mistakes. Made-up forms like goed, buyed, cutted, and mixing up the past simple with the participle (went vs gone). Never a form of another verb.
- You hear every verb. The base form when the verb appears, the right form after every gate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the past simple and the past participle?
The past simple (went) stands on its own: I went home. The past participle (gone) needs a helping verb: I have gone, it was done. In Rally you drive through the past simple first, then the participle.
Why are some forms the same, like buy – bought – bought?
For many verbs the past simple and the past participle are the same (bought, taught, kept). Then the same gate is right at both checkpoints.
How many verbs are in one race?
One set of up to 8 verbs: 16 checkpoints, about 2 minutes. The sets are the same as in Word Builder and Fish Feeding.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, in this browser. A set is mastered at 85 % right first time, and it also builds its part of the building in Word Builder.
